The New York Islanders traded their first-round pick (no. 13) on July 7, trading it to the Montreal Canadiens for 22-year-old defenseman Alexander Romanov.

  • He appeared in 133 NHL games during his first two seasons, the most of any player selected in the second round or later of the 2018 draft.
  • He is one day older than Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson. Romanov was born January 6, 2000, Dobson was born January 7, 2000.
  • He was the youngest defenseman in Canadiens' history to score a goal in the Stanley Cup Finals
  • In 2021-22, Romanov was awarded the Jacques Beauchamp-Molson Trophy in Montreal. The trophy is awarded to the player who played a dominant role during the regular season, without earning any honor.
  • In 2019, Romanov was named the best defenseman of the IIHF World Junior Championship and was voted to the All-Star Team.
  • Romanov played for CSKA in the KHL, where he was teammates with Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin for three seasons.
