Game Summary:
In the final game of a three-game set between the Islanders and Devils, the Islanders came out with the win in a shootout and swept the Devils in this three-game set. The Islanders lineup tonight was different with JG Pageau and Noah Dobson (COVID-19 protocol) OUT with Austin Czarnik, Sebastian Aho IN. The Islanders dominated 5-5 play but needed to improve their powerplay.
Period by Period Analysis:
1st Period Breakdown-
The Islanders came out flying scoring an early goal! Bellows got the tip in from Aho’s shot and the Islanders took an early lead. Not too long after, the Devils tie it up on a powerplay goal. The Islanders dominated 5-5 play but continued to struggle on the man advantage. With exactly 1 second to go in the period Brock Nelson shoots and scores. The Islanders outshot the Devil's 15-6.
2nd Period Breakdown-
The second period was fast paced on both sides. The Islanders had costly turnovers but Sorokin bailed the Islanders out multiple times. With 3:56 to go in the second, Sharangovich tied the game at 2. The Islanders were outshot by the Devils 12-10.
3rd Period Breakdown-
The Isles dominated the third period but could not capitalize. The Devils netminder had a bunch of crucial saves that kept the score tied.
Overtime Breakdown-
The Islanders had a few good looks in overtime but Scott Wedgewood kept them out. The Devils scored but the call was overturned after a NJ skater was offside. Brock Nelson takes a penalty with 2:24 left in overtime which the Islanders killed off. A shootout was required.
Shootout Breakdown-
The Islanders and Devils headed to a shootout and Sorokin came up big when he needed to. Anthony Beauviller and Oliver Wahlstrom both scored in the shootout to win it for the Isles.
Looking Ahead:
The Islanders will battle the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night with puck drop set for 7:00 pm EST on MSG+. Semyon Varlamov should get the start in net for the Islanders Tuesday night. Expect more lineup changes to come with Dobson, Pageau OUT tonight. Bellows played well again tonight so he should remain in the lineup on that first line filling in for Anders Lee.
