ISLES FALL IN THE SHOOTOUT, GET A POINT

BY, EVERYDAYISLES

The Islanders drop this one in the shootout after an incredible 3rd period goal by Mat Barzal, they couldn’t finish it in overtime or the shootout. Evgeni Malkin scored a last minute goal to send it to overtime to take away the regulation win opportunity from the Islanders. The night started off looking very good for the Islanders after an incredible goal by Casey Cizikas. Cizikas stole the puck from Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman John Marino and made an incredible move to get a get passed goaltender Casey DeSmith. The Penguins were quick to tie the game at 1 after the Cizikas goal.

“Barzy was really solid, he actually played a really solid 2 way game today” -Barry Trotz

This game was very full of back and forth action between the Isles and the Pens. The Islanders came back strong to take the lead once again with an incredible deflection goal from JG Pageau. Like the first goal of the game, Pittsburgh came back strong to tie it in the next frame. Cal Clutterbuck went down during the second with an apparent lower body injury but returned by the start of the 3rd. Mathew Barzal scored an incredible goal with just under 7 minutes left in the third period Unfortunately for the Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin was able to send it to overtime with a late goal with under 30 seconds left.

“I just had a full head of steam and knew it was a 1-on-1 so I just tried to make the move on him” -Barzal on his 3rd period goal

Overtime was very eventful for both teams, both goaltenders with lots of big saves to keep their teams in the game. The shootout was not too eventful for either team until Sidney Crosby out waited goaltender Semyon Varlamov. Josh Bailey had to score to keep his team in the game and unfortunately he was not able to get it in the back of the net. The Islanders after tonight have scored a total of 28 goals in 12 games so far this season averaging 2.33 goals scored per game. Luckily the Isles were able to get a point and now have a 5 game point streak, the Islanders next game will be Saturday vs. Boston.
